Clifford Schimek is a Florida-based independent insurance agent who has specialized in auto insurance and FR-44 compliance for decades. This page is where the professional and the personal intersect — who I am, how I work, and why any of it matters.
I didn’t set out to become a Florida auto insurance specialist.
I started where a lot of people start — at the bottom of a restaurant kitchen. Dishwasher, busboy, waiter. It felt natural enough that I went to college and majored in restaurant and food service management, which felt like the right direction at the time. After graduation I stayed in that world — cook, chef, manager, comptroller, general manager. I worked my way up.
But somewhere around thirty, the reality of that life caught up with me. Nights, weekends, every holiday you can name. The hours were unforgiving, the stress was constant, and it wasn’t the kind of life that left much room for anything else.
I knew I needed a change. Sales felt like the right direction — I’d spent years managing people, handling pressure, and building relationships in one of the most demanding service industries there is. Those skills translated. I just needed to find the right arena.
The answer came from an unlikely place. I was sitting with an independent insurance agent who was setting me up with a personal health insurance policy. We got to talking about his work, and something he said stuck with me. In insurance, he explained, a sale doesn’t just close — it renews. Year after year. You build a book of business that compounds over time. Renewals, then referrals, then more sales. For someone coming out of the restaurant world, where every night essentially started from zero, that concept was genuinely appealing.
I was impressed with him. And I was even more impressed with the model.
That’s where it started.
What I discovered once I got into it was something I hadn’t fully anticipated — I was good at explaining complicated things to people who felt overwhelmed by them. Sitting with someone in a genuinely stressful situation, making sense of something confusing, and watching them leave calmer and more confident than when they arrived. That turned out to matter to me more than I expected.
Because in insurance, you don’t just sell a policy and disappear. You show up again — when someone gets married, buys a new car, purchases a home, or calls you nervously because their teenager just got a driver’s license. These are real moments in people’s lives, and you’re part of them. The renewals I found so appealing early on turned out to be something deeper than I realized: they were touchpoints. Opportunities to exercise a little compassion at every stage. That’s what makes this work endearing in a way that’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced it. The relationship becomes more than business. It just does.
That’s still what drives me.
What I Actually Focus On
Most insurance agents handle everything — home, auto, life, commercial, umbrella, and everything else squeezed somewhere in between. There’s nothing wrong with that. But it makes it nearly impossible to be exceptional in one area when your attention is constantly divided.
I made a deliberate choice a long time ago to focus overwhelmingly on Florida auto insurance. That’s where my attention lives, day in and day out. It’s what I quote, explain, troubleshoot, and refine constantly. Florida’s auto insurance landscape moves fast — underwriting patterns shift, carriers adjust, pricing logic changes — and because I’m immersed in it daily, I stay sharp in ways that a generalist simply can’t.
Within that focus, I’ve also developed a deep subspecialty in FR-44 insurance in Florida. That’s the state-mandated compliance requirement that applies after certain DUI convictions in Florida — and it’s not a typical policy. It involves higher liability limits, exact timing, continuous coverage requirements, and zero room for payment mistakes. Handled correctly, it’s manageable. Handled casually, it becomes a cycle of cancellations, reinstatements, and extended compliance periods that nobody wants.
I work with FR-44 cases constantly. That repetition matters. The details that trip people up aren’t mysteries to me — they’re patterns I’ve seen play out hundreds of times.
The Situations I See Every Day
People come to me from all kinds of starting points:
Clean drivers who just want solid coverage at a fair price and someone they can actually reach when something changes. Multi-driver households trying to structure a policy that doesn’t penalize them unfairly. Drivers who made a mistake — a DUI, a lapse, a bad stretch — and are now trying to get back on solid ground. People relocating to Florida who don’t realize yet how differently this state prices auto insurance compared to where they came from.
And across all of those situations, the same thing is usually missing: someone who explains what’s actually happening, not just what to sign.
What “Independent Agent” Actually Means
I’m an independent agent, which means I’m not tied to a single insurance company. I work with multiple carriers and can compare options, identify underwriting advantages at specific companies, and place drivers where the underwriting actually works in their favor — both at the point of sale and over time.
That flexibility matters more than most people realize, especially when a driver’s situation is complicated. Some carriers view certain risk profiles more favorably than others. Knowing those differences — and staying current on how they shift — is part of what specializing in Florida auto insurance makes possible.
How I Approach This Work
The philosophy I’ve carried through this entire career is simple:
Auto insurance isn’t a one-time purchase. It’s an ongoing process.
The company you choose today affects the options you’ll have six months from now. The way you structure coverage today affects how carriers view you next year. The way you handle payments today affects your eligibility later. And the way a professional guides you through all of that — or doesn’t — makes an enormous difference in where you end up.
That’s why many of my clients have stayed with me for years. Not because of a sales pitch. Because the process keeps working for them.
