Progressive Confirms Excess Profits Credits for Florida Auto Policyholders in 2026

Progressive has now confirmed it will issue excess profits credits to eligible Florida personal auto policyholders in 2026.

This is the follow-up to the earlier announcement I shared Progressive Florida Rebate 2026 — and it officially moves things from “possible” to “in progress.”

According to Progressive, eligible Florida auto policies are now being updated with an endorsement that allows credits to be applied earlier than Florida law normally requires, returning excess profits tied to the 2023–2025 accident years.

Here’s what this actually means for Florida drivers — and what to watch for so timing doesn’t accidentally work against you.

What Is an “Excess Profits Credit”?

This is not a discount and not a promotional rebate.

Florida law requires insurers to return profits if underwriting results exceed what the state considers reasonable. After several difficult years for Florida auto insurance, recent legal reforms and pricing corrections stabilized results faster than expected.

That produced excess underwriting profit — which must be returned to policyholders.

Progressive is issuing an endorsement now so it can apply these credits earlier than required by statute, instead of delaying the process.

If you want a deeper explanation of how Florida auto insurance pricing really works behind the scenes — including why credits like this don’t happen randomly — I break that down here:

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify, policyholders must meet specific criteria:

  • You must have had an active Florida personal auto policy on December 31, 2025
  • Credits are prorated based on premium earned during 2025
  • Policies canceled before year-end 2025 are not eligible
  • If you switched carriers during 2025, you may still qualify for a partial, prorated credit, depending on how long your policy was active

No Action Is Required (and None Can Be Taken)

Eligible policyholders do not need to request anything.

  • Notifications will be sent mid-January through February 2026
  • Credits will be applied within several weeks after notification
  • There are no exceptions to the process

Calling customer service or your agent won’t speed things up — the credit is applied automatically.

How the Credit Is Applied (This Part Matters)

This is the section most people misunderstand.

Credits are applied in this order:

  1. Any outstanding balance due
  2. Toward a renewal premium, if a renewal is available
  3. Any remaining amount is refunded to the last payment method on file

This means some policyholders may never receive a check — but they still benefit financially through reduced balances or renewal costs.

This same sequencing logic applies in many other Florida auto insurance situations — including mid-term changes, cancellations, and renewals — which I explain in more detail here:

Why Timing Matters More Than People Realize

Here’s where I see people get tripped up.

If a policy is canceled before December 31, 2025, eligibility is lost — even if the policy was active for most of the year. Switching carriers too quickly or canceling without understanding timing can unintentionally eliminate a credit.

This doesn’t mean staying with Progressive is always the right move — it means understanding the timing before making changes is critical. This is exactly why I encourage Florida drivers to talk things through before switching policies mid-stream.

Where FR-44 and compliance-focused policies fit into this

Situations like this are a good reminder that Florida auto insurance isn’t just about price — it’s about compliance and timing. I see this constantly with FR-44 cases, where canceling or switching a policy at the wrong moment can trigger license issues, DMV penalties, or lost eligibility for things like credits or refunds. Even if you’re not carrying an FR-44 today, the same principle applies: policy status, effective dates, and uninterrupted coverage matter far more than most drivers realize. That’s why I walk clients through these decisions carefully, especially when a policy change overlaps with regulatory or financial consequences. If you want a deeper explanation of how FR-44 works — I break it down in detail on FR44.net.

What This Signals About Florida Auto Insurance in 2026

This credit is backward-looking, but it’s also a quiet signal that the Florida auto insurance market is stabilizing.

It doesn’t mean rates automatically drop tomorrow — but it does indicate carriers are moving out of survival mode and into a more balanced environment. That matters for future pricing, renewals, and available options.

I’ve been tracking these shifts closely across the Florida market, and this is one of the clearer indicators we’ve seen heading into 2026.

Final Thought

If you’re a Florida driver with a Progressive policy — or you’re considering switching — this is one of those situations where details, timing, and small decisions matter more than they appear on the surface.

If you want help reviewing your situation or understanding how this applies to you, I’m always happy to walk through it.
